GRAMMY award-winning band Los Lobos gave an intimate performance for all those in attendance in MOLAA’s sculpture garden, rounding out the night.

The LEGADO Lifetime Achievement Award was presented posthumously to “L.A.’s Sculptor,” Robert Graham. Graham’s wife, Anjelica Huston, accepted the award on the late sculptor’s behalf. Sol Trujillo was presented with the LEGADO Philanthropy Award during this special evening celebrating Latin American and Latino culture.

Coinciding with the annual Gala, Robert Graham’s Civic Monuments exhibition made its debut at MOLAA. Curated by Noriko Fujinami, the exhibition showcases several maquettes and photographs, providing an intimate view of Graham’s impact on communities throughout the United States. It is the first time all seven maquettes have been presented together in one exhibition.

The Annual Gala at MOLAA is the Museum’s signature fundraising event. All proceeds directly benefit upcoming exhibitions and educational programming. This year’s Gala was a success, raising over $300,000 thanks to the generosity of all those in attendance. Doubt creeps in and it makes us second guess things at the worst times. Things we practice and get right suddenly get blurry. My colleagues in EMS would consistently pull out mounds of paper and laminated cards wrapped in a rubber band from their flight suits or cargo pants. No order to them really. Called their “cheat sheets”, it was unlikely they would access the info quick enough, and they’d look weird doing it! Or worse, unsure. I wanted a better way, but it didn’t exist until now…
My book has drip rates for the most popular drugs, an ideal body weight chart, push Epi dosages, pediatric code drugs and math in one ”handy” chart, a RACE scale, and the dreaded pediatric drug dosages (based on protocols from around the country). The durable covers are laminated and fold out to be read in your lap while in the ambulance or the aircraft. Hash marks in CM along the edge to measure wounds rounds out the utility of this tool.
I made this book because it’s a tool I wanted that had more than GCS scores and a pupil size chart. I wanted something for our unique EMS environment, with a simple pad that we can refer to and write our complex reports from (and look professional while getting reports from staff). With this pad we don’t have to write the report on the discharge envelope any more and potentially forget a vital piece of information. The pad has a template to get the pertinent info down quickly and accurately. The way the book is laid out is simple and concise. The charts are printed on the covers which are laminated and fold out. The pad itself has all the info we need to take an accurate report. Once you’ve used up the pad, you keep the covers in your pocket or order refills and I’ll ship them out!
I’ve been putting this together for a couple of years on and off, Trialed different versions, and have since made a real push to get this out into your hands.

The People’s Party of Canada seeks to get its platform in the hands of residents so they can make an informed decision in the upcoming federal election on October 21, 2019.

Five human rights groups comprising the Coalition to Advance Religious Freedom in China working group were presented humanitarian awards in honor of their service in working to solve some of humanity’s most challenging problems. Dr. Joseph L. Green, Jr., Chairman of the Congressional Commission on the 400 Years of African American History was awarded for his leadership in achieving the purpose of the Commission to observe this important American milestone.

Commissioner Kristina Arriaga, of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom spoke about her passion for religious freedom and the need to support groups working to expose abuses of those freedoms around the world. Ms. Arriaga spoke about the courage needed by these awardees to speak up despite threats to their families, themselves, and their livelihoods. In addition to her work on the Commission, she has served as Advisor to the US delegation to the United Nations Human Rights Commission and appointee to the Civil Rights Commission,

The subject of International Religious Freedom has been highlighted in the media lately but many are not aware of its worldwide impact and how the support of religious freedom will bring about more peace, economic growth, and national security.

Each of the organizations honored have members who are suffering abuses in China such as arrests, detentions, confinement in “re-education” camps, and having their children taken away. Some have been able to escape to various countries including the United States and raise the alarm.

Awardees were:

The Uyghur Human Rights Project, accepted by Omer Kanat, Director of the Uyghur Human Rights Project. Mr. Kanat talked about the approximately two million members of the Uyghur ethnic group, primarily Muslims, who are detained in “re-education” camps. Their children are often taken and put into separate children’s camps to indoctrinate them into the Chinese Communist Party.

China Aid, accepted by Logan Carmichael, Director of Advocacy for China Aid and the Chair of the Coalition to Advance Religious Freedom in China. Ms. Carmichael spoke about their work in supporting Christians and minorities in China. Many Christian “house churches” are closed and the pastors are arrested for “holding an illegal meeting” and usually jailed.

Church of Almighty God, accepted by Ms. Shirley Fan, an escaped Chinese member. This church may be new but they have millions of members in China and around the world and seek to be able to exist and practice their faith. Many of their members have been jailed for attending their church.

Citizen Power Initiatives for China, accepted by Mr. Jianli Yang, President of Citizen Power Initiatives for China. Mr. Yang spoke about their work to promote democracy in China and support those imprisoned for their religious beliefs in China.

The Falun Dafa Association of Washington, DC, accepted by Mr. Sean Lin. Mr. Lin is the Director of Communications and told the crowd about the hundreds of Falun Gong practitioners who have been jailed, tortured, and/or died in prison solely due to their spiritual practices and beliefs.

Dr. Joseph L. Green, Jr. was awarded for his work to bring to light the long history of resilience and cultural contributions from the African-American community, as well as the unvarnished truth about slavery and discrimination.

Dr. Green is the Chairman of the Congressional Commission on the 400 years of African American History. The Commission brings to light the legacy of African Americans starting all the way back in 1619 when the first Africans landed in the British colony of Jamestown. Records of the time show a group of enslaved Africans arrived as property in Port Comfort, Virginia, now the Fort Monroe National Monument, starting the long and often uncomfortable history of African Americans.

The 15-member commission was established on January 8, 2018, to coordinate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in the English colonies. The commission includes Mr. Lonnie G. Bunch III, Founding Director of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and current Secretary of the Smithsonian Institute.

Dr. Green has spoken at the United Nations, at the US Capitol, and at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation Annual Legislative Conference among many other actions to raise awareness of this important and historic milestone.

At the end of its useful life it was displayed in preservation at Frontier Land amusement park in Cherokee, North Carolina, before moving to the Town Hall Museum, Cedar Point amusement park, in the 1960s.

WASHINGTON, DC, USA, October 16, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Top officials at Animal Wellness Action and the Animal Wellness Foundation urged the governors and other top elected leaders of American Samoa, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands to signal to the community of cockfighting enthusiasts that they must cease their staged fights and related activities, including organizing derbies, staging fights, raising birds for fighting, selling animals for fighting, or attending these spectacles.

“The United States has the authority to outlaw staged animal fights in the U.S. Territories, and it has done so,” said Drew Edmondson, the former four-term Attorney General of Oklahoma and co-chair of the Animal Wellness National Law Enforcement Council. “The Congress, the Federal Courts, and the U.S. Department of Justice have been crystal clear on the matter: engage in animal fighting activities and go to prison. All of our political leaders need to remind their constituents of these legal realities.”

Edmondson was attorney general when Oklahoma voters banned cockfighting in 2002. That same year, the Congress upgraded the federal law against animal fighting, banning any interstate or foreign commerce in the animals for fighting. As such, Edmondson has experience in helping Oklahoma transition from a hotbed of cockfighting to a jurisdiction that explicitly outlawed the practice.

“The cockfighting community in Oklahoma challenged our state law and they made efforts to challenge federal law without success,” added Edmondson. “As with both the states and the territories, Congress has the power to outlaw this conduct and exercised that authority in upgrading the law five times in the last 17 years.” All federal legal actions to invalidate the statute have failed.

In recent months, a number of cockfighting practitioners and a business named Club Gallistico de Puerto Rico, sued the federal government some months ago and argued that Section 26 of the Animal Welfare Act forbidding animal fighting is unconstitutional as applied to the territories. The U.S. Department of Justice filed a brief in response earlier this month, emphatically arguing that most animal fighting activities are already illegal in the territories and the upgrade of the law, set to take effect on December 20th, simply builds on the roster of prohibited activities. “Just as courts have unanimously affirmed the ability of the federal government to restrict animal fighting in the fifty states, so too may it do so with respect to the territories.”

According to the Department of Justice in its pleadings, the upgrade in the law stipulated that cockfighters “may not sponsor or exhibit cockfights, just as prior to §12616 they were prohibited from attending cockfights, possessing game cocks, or engaging in other animal fighting practices that were prohibited both in Puerto Rico and nationwide.”

Animal Wellness Action founder Wayne Pacelle recently traveled to Guam and was able to walk into a cockfight in progress, with about 150 people in attendance. “Between now and December 20th, it’s critical that they get the message by December 20th that staging fights, attending fighting, shipping birds or fighting paraphernalia, and even possessing fighting birds are federal felonies,” added Pacelle. “There’s no ‘Get-Out-of-Jail-Free’ card for cockfighters and other perpetrators of malicious cruelty to animals.” Pacelle called on the leaders of all the U.S. territories to affirm in a public way that the law, including the federal law against animal fighting, must be observed.

“The rule of law is a sacred doctrine in the United States,” added Edmondson, speaking on behalf of the 25-member Animal Wellness National Law Enforcement Council. “Defying our laws against animal cruelty is not tolerable, and we’ll be working hard to see that the law speaks in every part of the United States, including the Territories.”

Giant 38.39-ounce gold nugget that resembles the shape of Australia, mined at Ganes Creek, Alaska, about 150 miles east-southeast from Unalakleet, on the Norton Sound ($99,175).

Large 33.83-ounce gold nugget, shaped nearly identical to the skull used in pirate logos, found in Alaska’s Chandler District, along the Squaw Creek drainage, still active today ($77,550).

RENO, NV, UNITED STATES, October 15, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ — Two giant-size gold nuggets mined in Alaska during the days of the Gold Rush – one a 38.39-ounce nugget roughly in the shape of Australia, the other a 33.83-ounce nugget in the shape of a skull – sold for a combined $172,725 at an auction held October 4th thru 7th by Holabird Western Americana Collections, online and in the Reno gallery at 3555 Airway Drive.
The gold nuggets were the top lots in a four-day Americana auction bursting with more than 3,l00 lots in a wide array of collecting categories – to include petroliana, aviation, World War II, railroadiana, Native Americana, stock certificates, mining, minerals, coins and gold. A special section was devoted to dealers, with great bargains lotted specifically with re-sellers in mind.
“We called this our fall season second chance auction, because for anyone who missed any of our great 2019 sales, this was their second chance to fill the holes in their collections,” said Fred Holabird of Holabird Western Americana Collections. “Bidders absolutely heeded the call, as we had solid participation live in the gallery and especially online. Overall it was a fantastic sale.”

The 38.39-ounce gold nugget that resembled the shape of Australia was mined at Ganes Creek, Alaska, about 150 miles east-southeast from Unalakleet, on the Norton Sound, which is 150 miles southeast of Nome. Ganes Creek is known for its large nuggets and there are several “Pay” nugget finding operations still there today. The nugget, large by any standard, sold for $99,175.

The other nugget, 33.83 ounces and shaped nearly identical to the skull used in pirate logos, was found in Alaska’s Chandler District, along the Squaw Creek drainage. It’s still active today; placer gold has been produced there since around 1900. The nugget, measuring 2 inches by 3 ¼ inches, hammered for $77,550, a figure helped along by its crowd-pleasing pirate skull shape.

Following are additional highlights from the auction. For those unable to attend the sale in person, online bidding was facilitated by iCollector.com, LiveAuctioneers.com, Invaluable.com, AuctionMobility.com and Auctionzip.com. All prices quoted here include the buyer’s premium.

Day 1, October 4th, contained 772 lots of textiles, Native Americana, art, music, maps, foreign collectibles, sports, military and aviation, railroadiana, postal history, Wells Fargo and more.

A star lot was a nice and unusual Mexican rawhide saddle bag from about the 1940s (or earlier), similar to the ones Pony Express riders had, with leather tassels and really long leather strapping ($7,187). Also, a group of 14 letters exchanged between a brother and a sister between 1864-66, in Genoa, Nevada, plus a Gold Rush-era gold buckle and a 15kt gold ring, finished at $2,125.

Other Day 1 lots included a map of the “New World” (New York and New England, to include Manhattan) from 1606, shown as “New France” (La Nuova Francia), with characterizations of “Americans” (settlers, Indians, etc.) brought $2,000; and a pair of Native American “Gauntlet Gloves” made from elk skin with elaborate, multi-colored beadwork, made circa 1900-1920 by one of the Northern Plains Tribes of Montana, plus a pair of tiny fantasy moccasins, made $500.

Day 2, October 5th, was packed with 736 lots of marbles, bottles, saloon items, cigar and tobacco, cowboy collectibles, firearms, weaponry, tokens, numismatics (to include coins, currency, dies, medals, so-called dollars and general items), toys, World’s Fair and Expos, political memorabilia, and general and foreign Americana (Australia, Canada and Panama).

A large white enamel sign from the Automobile Club of Southern California, circa 1910-1920, 2 feet by 3 feet and showing the mileage from an older country road (no longer in use) to Lida, Big Pine, Goldfield and Tonopah (Nev.), in very good shape for its age, knocked down for $5,490.

Also sold on Day 2 were an 1892-CC Morgan silver dollar with full eagle feathers on the reverse but flat hair on the obverse, indicating a weak strike ($938); and an octagonal 1876 California fractional gold half-dollar coin, BG 949, R4, in proof-like condition on the reverse side ($468).

Day 3, Sunday, October 6th, featured over 800 lots of gold, jewelry, minerals, mining (foreign, general and geographically sorted), fossils, collectible spoons, Gold Rush memorabilia and more. A top lot was a circa 1900 ladies’ solitaire diamond ring set in 14kt gold and having a one-carat, European cut diamond. The ring, having outstanding quality, slipped on a new finger for $2,684.

Other Day 3 stars included the 1905 Atlas of the Goldfield, Tonopah & Bullfrog Mining Districts of Nevada, with claim maps and a directory of all the mining companies operating in the districts at the time, 93 pages plus five large color fold-out maps ($2,625); and a spectacular eye-catching 1871 stock certificate for the Monitor and Northwestern Mining Company of Milwaukee (Wis.), for five shares issued to Sarah Mattison, with a vignette of Monitor Mountain, Calif. ($1,875).

Day 4, Monday, October 7th, contained 818 lots of calendars, cameras, fire items, directories, transportation (planes, trains, automobiles), and bargains and dealer specials in all categories. A Toliver Aerial Navigation Company (Phoenix, Ariz.) stock certificate, issued on July 28th, 1911 for 100 shares to “M. Corekey”, signed by the president (“CH Toliver”) and assistant secretary, with a fabulous vignette of a flying machine over a town (possibly Phoenix) gaveled for $562.
